Recently Ms .Mackintoshes 3rd year English class has been causing a stir after being inspired by a book. “Stone Cold” written by Robert Swindells explores the issues around homelessness, . . .
. “Stone Cold” written by Robert Swindells explores the issues around homelessness, and after reading the book the class felt inspired to assist in charitable work. Bernie Macleod, mother of Ally and Angus Macleod, pupils at the school, was delighted to welcome the class to The Salvation Army HQ in Inverness. The volunteers there welcomed the enthusiastic group, and were happy to answer any questions the group may have.
Before that, The Salvation Army sent speakers with experience of homelessness to talk to the class. Bernie told the class of 14, that homelessness can happen to anyone. However the most common reason for it is family break-up followed by addictions such as drugs or drink. She later went on to explain that it’s a scary subject and although it’s a common one around Scotland most people don’t like to talk about it.
Now knowing more about the subject the class decided to visit to the centre in Inverness would make a new and interesting change instead of class work and would motivate them linking the book and the true stories behind it. The beneficial trip was a success. However, it was clear the Salvation Army work in very cramped conditions.
Knowing the Salvation Army was also in need of donations the group felt that they were in a position that they could do something to help. They organised a successful bake sale which raised £200.
Finally we asked the class if their views had at all changed from the start of the term. The verdict was yes.
“Yes. I feel it has affected me more now that I know more about it.”- Gregor M
“I think homeless, I think people lying on the streets before. But now I think some of the time it’s not their fault.”- Nathan
