Fortrose Academy’s sixteen year old Megan Oag (sixth year) has had quite a busy year and it looks like this year could be the same!

Megan looks to go into the fashion industry when she is older and is doing everything in her power to get a pass in her art exams. To do this she is designing a dress which is inspired by the beach, she has chosen typical beach related objects like shells, beach glass, tropical fish and pebbles/sea rocks. She said, “On the beach there is such a wide variety of things to choose from and it helps that I live really close to the beach. That’s where my inspiration came from.”
As Megan is making this dress for her exams in March she is quite pushed for time. If you include the entire planning process, collecting some bits and pieces from the beach and then actually getting down to making the dress, the pressure is on! The dress she makes has to be made to fit her so she can model it which makes this task even harder. When I was talking to Megan she said that the whole process of making this dress will take a year but she is certain she will have it done by the deadline.
A lot of thought is involved in dress making. You have to think about what material is going to work with the design of the dress how much of it you’re going to need so there is no wastage. You have to think about colours, texture and different folds and how it’s going to sit on your body.
Megan is experienced in dress making as last year for her exams she made a ball gown that was based around Greek culture. This dress didn’t take nearly as long to make as the current one. She estimated that the Greek dress took 3-4 months.
She hopes after her sixth year studies to go to Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh where she plans to study fashion for 4-5 years but art school anywhere at the moment is very difficult to get into and Heriot Watt especially as it is a very good university.
