Interested in riding? Find out what it’s like! by Isla Quate and Esther Ross
Broomhill Riding Centre is an equestrian centre in the Black Isle which draws the attention of the students at Fortrose Academy including Emma Bennet in second year who regularly attends Broomhill.
Many pupils know what a great job Broomhill does and all the fantastic opportunity’s that they offer.
Emma has two horses one called Boo and one called Ruby, Boo is 11 and Ruby is 9.
“Personally looking after a horse is harder in winter than in summer. In the winter I have to go to Broomhill every day to muck out the stables, feed my horses, fill their hay nets, make sure they have fresh water, put their rugs on and most days I ride as well.”
In the winter there is a big difference in commitment and their is also a difference in price as well, the price goes up by just over £10 pound a week to keep your pony out and a little more if you keep your horses in for the winter Emma explained.
Emma said that safety is a very important factor in horse riding as it can be an extremely dangerous sport. Emma has had quite a few injuries including her horse standing on her face.
The equipment needed for the rider is a hat, boots, gloves and sometimes a whip depending on the horse you are riding and the horse will need a saddle and a bridle.
“Horse riding is a very expensive and time consuming lifestyle choice so maybe people would be interested in riding if it was a little bit cheaper but I wouldn’t suggest it to somebody who is looking for a little hobby to do on the side, my reason being its expensive and well its rather addictive to be honest once you start its extremely hard to stop!”
Emma explained the changes that could be made at Broomhill to make it a better place for example the chicken pen should get fixed so the chickens can’t escape, the ground in the stables should be concreated so it’s a little less rocky and they should look in to getting some new field shelters.
THE RDA
“The Riding for the Disabled Association is a brilliant opportunity for people with disabilities, it offers them the chance to ride and communicate with others like them and horses as well!”
The RDA is definitely an advantage to Broomhill rather than a disadvantage because it gives disabled people a chance to ride and also draws more attention to the riding centre itself.
Broomhill ran an open day which showcased a fantastic range of entertainment, pony rides and stalls it also managed to attract new volunteers for the RDA.
RDA riders are found at Broomhill mainly on a Sunday.
If you are interested in getting involved please don’t hesitate to contact the centre.
