Netball is a sport that is becoming more popular with women in the North of Scotland. Netball is a fast pace ball game which is played all over the world. It is similar to basketball and there are 7 people in a team. It is a sport that is mainly played by women so it gives women and teenage girls a chance to socialise and have fun whilst doing sport.
This year Fortrose Academy has a 2nd and a 3rd year team entered into the Scottish schools netball cup and are hoping to do pretty well. I have interviewed two S2 pupils (Kaitlin Grant and Lindsay Stevenson) who are both playing in the Scottish cup.
Fortrose netball club is the school’s netball club. They train from 3:40-5:00 every Tuesday. They do drills and play games and are coached by Kate Whiteside. Both Kaitlin and Lindsay have been going to the club since the start of S1 and they really enjoy playing.
Lindsay has been playing netball for 4 years and plays for the school netball team and Fyrish Flyers netball club. The main positions that she plays are centre and wing attack. Kaitlin has been playing for 5 years and she also plays for the school netball team are Fyrish Flyers netball club. The main positions that Kaitlin plays are wing attack and wing defence. Kaitlin started in P4 because it looked like a fun sport to play and Lindsay started playing in P5 because a lot of her friends were playing and encouraging her to play.
Fyrish Flyers is the ross-shire netball team. They train on Saturday morning in Dingwall Academy and are coached by Ginette and Kathleen Anderson. There is a beginner and then an advanced class and both Lindsay and Kaitlin attend the advanced one. In the advance training session they do lots of drills and each week they work on a different thing like defending or attacking and they finish with about 40 minutes of game play.
Kaitlin said “I really enjoy playing with Fyrish Flyers because I feel it really improves my playing and I learn something new each week.”
It is clear that netball is a widely enjoyed in our school and around the world.
