Fortrose Academy’s History department believes in bringing the past to life for their students. They run many trips across the year each more exciting than the last, but they seemed to outdo themselves this year with a trip to the Culloden Battlefield Museum where History becomes Reality,
the two teachers responsible for this are Mr Cronin and Miss Stuart who decided to stop their students reading about the Battle of Culloden and allowed them to experience it. As the class was studying Prince Charlie and his failed revolution our history department decided to allow the pupils to have more of a hands on approach opposed to sitting and reading from a textbook, but don’t take our word for it we asked a pupil from Fortrose what he thought about the trip. First we asked him what he thought was informative about the trip, he responded with “The battlefield had lots of facts and cool things which were very interesting.”
Then we asked him if any emotions were triggered at the battlefield, he answered that by saying “Yes, sad ones because a lot of good soldiers died.”
Another question that was asked was if his views had changed on the war he had this to say, “No I still side with the Jacobite’s.”
We also asked him what his favourite activities were at the Battlefield and to rate them from favourite to least he had this to say. “I enjoyed the acting the most then the museum and then the battlefield the battlefield’s last because it was raining.”
Then we asked him if he would go again without the school he replied with. “No because I’ve already been”
After that we asked him if he had learnt more from a textbook he told us “No, I liked the hands on experience we got and all the special treatment.”
Finally we asked him if he learnt more from the trip or a whole term on the topic he informed us by saying” Definitely class as we got to cover a lot more in a lot more time which means a lot of learning.”
Culloden battlefield was highly rated by the school and will be a place to visit for families and foreigners all over the family.
