The trip to Malawi will be 21 students (from S2 to S4) and three teachers. The teachers that are organising the trip are Mr Ferns, Mrs Mackintosh, and Miss Stewart. This trip will be two weeks long.
The link between the two schools (Fortrose academy and the school in Malawi) is called Mufuto (MUlanje and FOrtrose TOgether). The reason the trip is happening is so that they can visit a school and a hospital. I think they will also be climbing Mount Mulanje. This is a three day trip up a mountain.
Malawi is a small country in South-eastern Africa. The country is landlocked however it has a very large lake. The wildlife in Malawi is amazing! You can find 700 different species of fish in Lake Malawi. You can also see Hares, Snakes, and the occasional leopard. You can find a lot of different hunters large and small, as well as antelope and eagles. Malawi’s big Five consists of Lions, Leopards, Cape buffalo, Black rhino, and elephants. They will get to see zebras and warthogs in national parks. At the end of this trip they will be able to go on safari in Zambia!
Did you know?
J.R.Tolkein wrote The Hobbit shortly after climbing The Mulanje Massif. The climb may have inspired his writing!
Thomas Fox (a member of the expedition) says “I am looking forward to going to a country so far away because I thought it would be interesting.” He also explained that the fundraising is “a daunting task” because you need to raise £2,000-£3,000 in two years.
The group will also be climbing Mount Mulanje. They will be camping up there and in total the trip will take three days. The mountain is 3,002 metres above sea level and the prominence of the mountain is 2,319 metres. This is Thomas’s opinion on climbing the mountain. “I think it will be fun and tiring because it is three days of walking.”
The group will also be going on a training weekend to prepare them for the long walk up the mountain and to get to know each other better. They will be staying in a house near Aviemore and will be going on a long walk, to help them be able to cope with the walk up Mount Mulanje. Each group will be preparing one or two meals on the weekend away. Thomas’s group will be preparing the Saturday breakfast and their packed lunch. Thomas has told me that it will be an enjoyable experience cooking (with his group) for so many people. For breakfast they will be cooking fried eggs, porridge and toast, and for lunch: soup and a sandwich.
