In 2012, Disney film Brave was released and soon became very successful. By 2014, it had already won an Academy award, a Golden Globe award, and a BAFTA award (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) - all for “Best Animated Film”.
Brave is an animated film based in Scotland. It is about a young Scottish princess called Merida who does not agree with the life her mother has planned out for her, so she rebels and makes choices that might come back to haunt her.
A pupil from Fortrose Academy was lucky enough to feature in this Disney Pixar production. We have interviewed Peigi Barker in second year to find out about her ‘film star’ experience.

What part did you play and what did this role include?
“I played the part of young Merida so I said a few lines at the beginning, and I also sang a song in Gaelic called Noble Maiden Fair with Emma Thompson- who played the part of Merida’s mother.”
Who did you work with?
“I worked with one of the directors- Mark Andrews, the producer- Katherine Sarafian and Emma Thompson (Merida’s mother), who I sang with.”
Where did you go for recording and how long did it take?
“For the singing I went to London and it took one day- which wasn’t as long as I had expected. For the speaking, I went to Glasgow which took roughly half a day.”
How old were you?
“I was nine.”
How did you find out about it and what did you have to do to get the part?
“I found out about it because Jim Sutherland- a famous musician- was looking for a nine year old girl who could sing and speak Gaelic, so I was asked if I wanted the part. I didn’t have to audition.”
Did you enjoy it? Why/why not?
“Yes because it was a different thing to do as if I’m singing, I usually just do MOD’s (Gaelic singing competitions).”
