The sponsored walk takes place every year. It is when all the pupils at Fortrose Academy walk 14 miles on the route which includes walking the railway, Ormond hill and the Rosehaugh Estate, but this year the walk was different.
with the sponsored walk being the first ever walk to take place on a half day Friday meaning the walk had to be cut down to 7 miles to make sure we made it home in time. However despite the shorter walk the school still managed to raise over 4000 pounds and we are still counting! The walk is a great way to raise money for the school, but what do pupils think of it?
Niamh Fawcett and Isla MacGregor, both S2 pupils, gave their reactions to the event. Niamh explained, “It’s ok, I find it to not be the most interesting thing.” However she went on, “I enjoyed walking and getting out and about.” Whereas Isla MacGregor said that “It’s good because it gets us out for the day and gets us walking” She also said why she liked it, “I like the walk because I love getting the banter with my mates”
Both Niamh and Isla agreed that the walk was a great way to raise money, with Isla stating, “Yes I think it’s a good way to raise money while still having fun.”
“I think the money goes towards the school.” Niamh said. “Yeah the money raised from the walk goes towards school benefits.” Replied Isla.
When told how much money the school raised, over four thousand pounds, both were surprised. “I think it’s really good that we can raise so much money for the school,” said Isla. “It’s cool how we can have fun and get out while still raising money.”
This year because the walk was on a half day Friday the walks routes where changed to be shorter meaning the walk was only 7 miles rather than the usual 14 miles. “The seven mile walk is much better.” Stated Niamh, with Isla saying, “7 miles Is much better because I find 14 is too long.”
Both agreeing when asked if they prefer it on the half-day Friday or the Thursday, Niamh stated that, “It’s much better on the half day Friday.” With Isla saying, “I definitely prefer the Friday walk.”
