Dance is something enjoyed by many, there are lots of dance lovers out there, here in Fortrose Academy we have participants of the Royal Ballet School, Ballet West, Dance in Action, Eden Court and many more.
Recently I received a flyer from my Dance Studio, Dance in Action; it was informing me about a dance workshop that was going to happen in the October Holidays. Caitlin Macleod and I saw an opportunity to show our love for dance with others around Inverness!
When the first day came around we met an amazing dance instructor called Jorge Crecis, 38, from Spain. He had a great first impression, jolly and up for a challenge, he had a great warm up routine and we all loved his teaching style. He wanted to see the best of our ability’s from each exercise. Jorge said “Dance is the moment when all my concentration, awareness and will is focused in what is happening in the moment and I use the body to channel that experience.”
During the week we got to know Jorge very well “I was 22 years old and I was studying sports sciences. My girlfriend took me to see a contemporary dance class and I got hooked.” His favourite style of dance is “Contemporary, because it is limitless, no form or shapes, no limitation of others, one self in its pure essence” Our week was based on the contemporary style.
One of his messages to us was to relax follow through “I feel immense joy. I let the music and the movement take over and I just follow, I feel powerful, I feel accompanied.” He has done 2 years of hard work to make a dance routine including dance, augmented reality and rope skipping. “I really enjoy my new solo: Through and Out. I have performed it 3 times; it was my favourite because although it is very minimalist, it took me two years to make this piece. It is very personal and I made it together with my great friend and long term collaborator Vincenzo Lamagna http://jorgecrecis.com/?page”
Gloria Garcia was his first dance teacher. He began his dancing in Madrid in a small school close to his house, a few weeks later he started at the conservatoire. Here at the conservatoire Jorge met a teacher “she was incredible, she was able to transmit amazing things when she danced. I remember the first time I saw her on stage, the audience clapped for nearly 10 minutes.”
“After dancing professionally in Spain, Belgium and in the UK, I decided I wanted to share what I had over those few years and was offered a full time post at the place. I was very happy there for 4 years and then I decided to become a choreographer and here I am” This is very positive but there is another side to this, there are a few challenges of being on the teaching side. “The challenges are that financially sometimes is unbalanced between the salary we receive and the amount of dedication and expertise required. Another challenge is always to be ready to give your best to your students, some days you wake up a bit more tired or sad but it doesn’t matter, students deserve the best and you have to pull together…”
Dance is something people enjoy very much people have big passions.
“The people I share it with. I don’t like to do it myself, I like to teach and choreograph because it involves other people.”
